The Fireside Rod Co. is an American company that builds and sells fishing rods.
In the 1920s, Charles Hayden realized that fishing rods could be a lucrative business, and began producing inexpensive rods. The company began as the Sonnenberg Rod Company, founded in 1921 by Hayden, Louis Sonnenberg, and Martin B. Lueking. In 1925, Hayden, Sonnenberg, and Lueking left the company and it was run as the Phoenix Rod Company. In 1927, Robert Burns, a former employee of Phoenix, bought out the other investors. In 1931, the company was sold to the Armour and Company, and the name was changed to the Fireside Rod Company.

Murine heart transplantation models in which the recipients are given intravenous injections of soluble murine CTLA4-Ig protein have shown that the administration of exogenous CTLA4-Ig protein can induce heart allograft tolerance. We have attempted to translate this approach to the clinical situation. We hypothesized that intravenous injections of soluble CD28, which binds to the same ligand, OX40, would cause tolerance. Recipient mice received 0.1 mg intravenous injections of soluble CD28 or an irrelevant protein before their hearts were transplanted into heart allograft recipients, together with a 7-day course of anti-CD40 antibody, CD40L DNA, and low dose total body irradiation (0.9 Gy). The untreated, unirradiated allograft recipient mice were used as controls. Untreated naive recipients rejected the untreated allografts acutely. The control group mice survived only 6 days. In contrast, CTLA4-Ig protein-treated, unirradiated recipients survived for an average of 30 days and CD28-treated mice survived for an average of 31 days. Recipients treated with CD28-Ig protein also showed evidence of heart graft tolerance and were able to accept cardiac allografts indefinitely. No significant toxic effects were observed.
